Day 47 The Eclipse

Today we hiked up and over three separate ridges and covered 23 miles.

I slept like a rock last night. After getting to camp a little late and getting into my tent, the sounds of the stream put me to sleep within minutes. I don’t remember waking up once until my alarm went off at 6:30.

We started hiking around 7:45 and went pretty slow for the first few hours. We stopped for a minute at a view point called Wind Rock.

After Wind Rock we descended 2,000 feet of elevation and climbed the quite steep ascent of Kelly Knob. The ascent was definitely the most strenuous part of the day. By this point the drizzling rain had stopped and the skies started to clear a little.

After Kelly Knob we had a beautiful section of meadows to walk through. The clouds obscured the eclipse, which had passed by the time the sun began to peak through. We also passed a 300 year old oak tree.

We made it to camp around 7 since we ate dinner at a water source about two miles back. We are camping about 9 miles from the next water source so we carried extra water up to the campsite. The upside of camping up on a ridge was the sunset.

Tomorrow is supposed to start raining around 11, and we will probably have rain until Thursday. We will probably hike 20-24 miles tomorrow depending on how we are feeling.

Goodnight,

Walker
