Day 48 Spring Showers
Today’s hike was a pretty easy 19 miles. We made it to the 700 mile mark and stayed mostly dry. The leaves have started to bloom.
I slept decently last night. We had a few animals moving around but nothing concerning. We chased off what I think was a raccoon or a skunk in the middle of the night. We woke up at 6:45 and were hiking by 8:10. The 8 mile water carry went pretty quickly and the ridge had some good views.
The rest of the hike involved two decent ascents and a good amount of ridge walking. On the way down from the second ridge Spencer almost stepped on a 4 foot rat snake. Fortunately these snakes are not venomous, but I still don’t like them. Tyler moved the snake out of the way for us with his trekking poles and we kept going.
We made it to our last water source for the day around 4PM with only 2 miles left to hike. We ate dinner for an hour and filled up water then hiked the last hour up to camp. On the way up we could clearly see spring start to show on the trees. It’s a good feeling to be past most of the cold and be into the better weather.
It was supposed to rain on us all day but it barely drizzled most of the day. We wore our rain jackets at points but I showed up to camp almost completely dry. We are camping about a quarter mile past the 700 mile mark.
Tomorrow was supposed to rain but it cleared up for us, which is really exciting because we will see the views from MacAfee Knob, Dragon Tooth, and Tinker Cliffs. These are three famous landmarks on the AT with excellent views. I’m very excited to see them for the first time, especially since the weather should be decent.
Goodnight,
Walker
