Day 49 Mountains, Views, and Pastures
Today was one of the most beautiful days I’ve ever spent outside.
We woke up at 6:45 and were hiking by 8. I slept decently and we had a very easy first 5 miles of the day and a beautiful sunrise.
We made it to Dragon’s Tooth while there was still some color in the sky from sunrise.
The weather was awesome all day, a little humid but we appreciated the clear skies and lack of rain. After Dragon’s Tooth we had 10 miles of hiking through pastures and valleys before climbing the next ridge.
The next ridge brought us up to McAfee Knob, one of the most famous points on the AT. There is a rock overhang and beautiful views of Southern Virginia. I was so grateful to have a mostly clear day to see everything.
After McAfee 4 miles to Tinker Cliffs. I knew the least about Tinker Cliffs of the three landmarks but ended up enjoying them the most. The trail followed a line of cliffs for around a third of a mile, and it was unlike any other hike I’ve done. I wasn’t really able to capture the cliff walk with pictures but I got a few of the views.
From Tinker Cliffs we had 2 miles left of our 22 mile day. I was pretty tired but pushed through. We stopped at a shelter just before our campsite to eat dinner, but decided to move past the shelter when another through hiker showed up since we wouldn’t have the shelter to ourselves. It’s supposed to rain tonight from 1AM through all day tomorrow. We only have 9 miles to hike into Daleville VA so we won’t mind getting a little wet. We will spend one night in Daleville and dodge most of the rain while getting a resupply and lots of town food. Virginia is the longest state of the AT and Daleville is about half way through the state.
I’m going to rest before the rain starts.
Goodnight,
Walker
