Day 53 Burn Area
We had an amazing sunrise and met some great people.
I slept really well last night and woke up around 6:30 to a beautiful sunrise.
We started hiking just before 8. The morning involved a steep downhill and uphill section where we climbed up over 3,000 feet and dropped down to around 700 feet of elevation.
For a decent part of the day we hiked through a burn area. I’ve seen a lot of these out west but this was the biggest one I’ve ever seen on the east coast. Burn areas are kind of cool and you can see everything around you because all the foliage has burned.
It was quite warm today and we had a major uphill climb to Bluff Mountain during the heat of the afternoon. Before beginning the ascent we filled up water and soaked our heads in the stream.
From Bluff we dropped down 1,300 feet in 2 miles to a gap where Tyler’s mom’s friend Heather picked us up. We hiked a total of 22.5 miles before 5:30PM. Heather and her family were incredibly generous and helpful. They fed us a full dinner of pizza, wings, and salad. They let us take showers and took us to the grocery store. And they are letting us sleep in a spare room. We really appreciate the generosity we have received on the trail.
Tomorrow we will get back to the trail around 8 and go around 25 miles. We left off at mile 798.5 so the 800 mile marker will be right around the corner.
Goodnight,
Walker
