Day 58 Foggy Shenandoah

Today was very foggy but we had an awesome view at the end of the day.

We slept in a little bit. There was another annoying deer last night that kept stomping around our tents all night. It finally left us alone around 12:30AM. We all were up and moving by around 7 and we still managed to be on trail before 8.

It rained a little on and off all day but the fog was thick enough that it would condensate on the trees and bushes. When the wind would blow the condensation would fall like rain. Luckily the temperature was a little cooler today so wearing rain gear was comfortable.

For most of the miles today we just put our heads down and covered distance. With the fog there really wasn’t much to look at.

We stopped for lunch at a shelter just before hitting the 900 mile mark.

In the afternoon we had a decent climb up to High Top Mountain and broke through the fog just before the summit. Seeing the perfectly blue skies everywhere but in the mountains was kind of funny. We’ve had such good luck with weather that it’s hard to complain about one foggy day.

After High Top the hike down to Swift Run Gap was easy. We met a shuttle driver who took us to the grocery store and to grab takeout burgers from a local restaurant. He offered to let us spend a little while at his house to charge up our electronics and eat our food. We took him up on this and it worked out perfectly. After a half hour we had eaten and charged our phones and he took us back to the trail. Everything pretty much worked out perfectly.

The weather down in town was beautiful with 70 degrees and sun. Once we got up into the mountains again it dropped down to the 60s and fog again. We made it to camp around 6:30 and were all set up for the night by 7:15.

The weather looks like it will return to sun for the next few days. We plan to hike 24-27 miles tomorrow and make the most of it.

Goodnight,

Walker
