Day 60 Burn Area
We had great weather and a pretty quick 24.5 miles of hiking.
We had more deer hang around the campsite last night. Between them and the barred owls I didn’t sleep great but I wasn’t up all night either.
We started moving around 6:45 and we were hiking just after 8. Tyler didn’t have much water so he went ahead 3 miles to a campsite that had a water spigot while Spencer and I ate breakfast. We caught up to Tyler and spent a few minutes hanging out at the campsite watching a very strange group of people cut trees down for their campfire. This is highly illegal in a national park, but it was pretty funny to watch.
We had a couple good views of the Shenandoah Valley throughout the day.
In the afternoon we hiked through the section of the park that burned in the forest fire last month. I’ve never been in such a recent burn area and the charred black mixed with the burnt orange pine nettles looked very interesting.
We made it to camp just after 5:30 and pitched our tents. Tomorrow we have a 14 mile hike out of the national park and into the town of Front Royal. We will take the afternoon to relax and resupply.
Goodnight,
Walker
