Day 69 Duncannon
Today we hiked 27.3 miles through Duncannon PA and back up into the ridges.
I slept very well last night and it didn’t rain at all. We woke up at 6:30 and were hiking by 8.
Pennsylvania has a reputation for having a lot of rocks. It’s nicknamed “Rocksylvanka”. Rocks make your feet sore when hiking, so they aren’t most people’s favorite thing to hike over. So far there haven’t been many rocks, but I’m sure they will come shortly.
In the morning we hiked 5 miles of hills and fields.
We then climbed up onto a ridge and walked that for 9 miles. There were a few good views on the climb up and at the top.
After walking the ridge we dropped down into the town of Duncannon. The trail went right past a Sunoco in town so we stopped and grabbed a cold Gatorade, water, and chocolate milk. We then walked through town for a couple miles before crossing the Susquehanna River and climbing back up another ridge.
There were a few more good views along the way.
We stopped at a shelter to fill up water and had an incredibly long and steep climb down to the spring. After filling up we hiked another 2.5 miles to an overlook that had a mediocre tent site. We decided to night hike for another 2.5 miles to get to a better site. There was an excellent sunset to end the day.
It will rain tonight but after the 80 and 90 degree heat the rain is welcome. Hopefully tomorrow isn’t as warm. Either way, we only plan to hike about 18 miles before Tyler’s great aunt Linnie will pick us up and take us out for dinner.
Goodnight,
Walker
