Day 70 Rattlesnakes and Warthogs

Today we hiked 18 easy miles with perfect weather and survived a rattlesnake encounter.

We all slept in after only getting to camp at 9PM last night. We woke up around 7 and were hiking around 8:45.

For most of the day we hiked through woods and past streams.

While we were hiking through a sunny section of woods I heard a high pitched rattle noise right next to me. I yelped and jumped to the side. Spencer had already walked by and the noise made Tyler stop in his tracks. I had stepped about 2 feet from the snake and that did not make him happy. Luckily we were able to keep a safe distance after that.

Just minutes after the snake encounter a couple of A10 Warthog jets flew right over our heads on a test flight. It’s always cool to see jets in action.

In the afternoon we stopped at a cold stream and dunked ourselves in a deep pool. The water was refreshing even if it was a little cold for comfort.

For the rest of the day we had a field walk and a burn area with a nice view.

We made it down to a parking lot where Tyler’s great aunt Lynie picked us up. She very kindly took us out to dinner and got us a hotel for the night. The hotel is definitely the nicest we’ve had on trail yet. Taking my first shower in 5 days of 80+ degree weather felt amazing.

Tonight we will hang out at Lynie’s house for a couple hours and go back to the hotel to go to bed early. Tomorrow we will get a late start but only hike 18 miles.

Goodnight,

Walker
