Day 76 Palmerton

hiked the whole day alone again, but Tyler and Spencer caught up at the campsite.

I slept in until 7:10 this morning and took my time with breakfast. I started hiking just after 8 only planning to go 17 miles. The first obstacle was a section called Knifes Edge, a section of trail with good views and a stony ridge that drops off on either side.

After Knifes Edge was the rocky climb up Bakeoven Knob.

Then I hiked through a forested section of trail before hitting a beautiful ridge walk where I sat for about an hour just enjoying the weather and the view.

Then I descended down into the town of Palmerton. The trail doesn’t actually go through Palmerton, but there is a 1.7 mile side trail that goes into town. Since I was still a couple hours ahead of Spencer and Tyler I decided to go into town and get some food. The walk in wasn’t bad.

In town I got a milkshake and some food. I hung out for about an hour and a half then hiked back to the trail. The climb out of Palmerton was way steeper than I expected. The challenge was quite fun. There were a couple sections of rock scramble, where the trail is about as steep as a ladder so I needed to use my hands and feet to climb upward.

The view from the top was very nice.

Once on top of the ridge I hiked about 2.5 miles to the campsite where all three of us planned to spend the night. There were a few people here so I looked a little further down trail in case there were more spots further down. There weren’t so I went back to the original spot and found some tent spots near the other hikers. Tyler and Spencer showed up around 8pm so we will continue hiking together going forward.

It is supposed to rain tonight but tomorrow looks clear. We will probably hike 22-23 miles which will be our last full day in PA.

Goodnight,

Walker
