Day 78 New Jersey

We hiked 23 miles out of Pennsylvania and into New Jersey.

I slept very well last night despite waking up a couple times to deer and porcupines coming through camp. We woke up at 6:30 and were hiking around 7:45.

The last 10 miles of PA were quite rocky but we had a couple good views.

We have entered the part of the north that was affected by glaciers during the last ice age, so the terrain has a different feel to it. You can see on the rocks and bluffs on hillsides were carved by glaciers.

After 10 miles of hiking we dropped down into the town of Delaware Water Gap. We shuttled into a grocery store to get a resupply then came back into the town and went to a barbecue restaurant right next to the trail. After lunch we crossed over the Delaware River and into New Jersey.

Shortly after entering NJ we passed the 1,300 mile mark. Less than 900 to go!

New Jersey has already been a nice change from PA. The trail has been slightly less rocky and overall we have had more views. We started out walking past a pond, which reminded me of the lakes in Maine that feel like home.

We then climbed up onto a ridge where we enjoyed views of undeveloped forest all around us. Most of PA has houses or farmland, so just seeing trees in NJ was a cool change.

We hiked the ridge for about 9 miles and made it to camp around 7. Somehow the weather was beautiful all day. It was supposed to rain, but the rain never came. Instead it was slightly overcast and 70 degrees.

The rain should start tonight and tomorrow is supposed to rain all day. We will probably get soaked for the first time in 1,100 miles. I guess we’re due for a wet day.

Goodnight,

Walker
