Day 80 Boardwalks

I slept very well last night from 11 to 6:30. We packed up our wet gear and were hiking by 8:20.

The weather was awesome all day, but in the morning it was especially great. It was a crisp 45 degrees and the sun shone through the trees.

We hiked 29 miles and finished New Jersey. I was surprised with how much I liked the state. In the morning we passed through fields and pastures.

We passed some ponds, streams, and flowers as well.

We stopped for lunch by a stream and let the sun dry out our gear for about an hour. Having dry gear made a big difference to our pack weight since we weren’t carrying extra water weight. After lunch we began the New Jersey boardwalks. A lot of the trail passes through wetlands so the boardwalk keeps hikers dry.

We stopped at a farm right off trail in Vernon NJ for some doughnuts and baked goods before climbing the steep ascent towards New York. We walked pretty much straight up the ridge in this picture.

After the climb we walked the ridge for a few miles and hit the New York state line.  Almost instantly after crossing the line the woods changed to much thicker forest that pretty closely resembled the woods of southern New Hampshire. We passed an overview called Prospect Rock that had an American flag and a view of the New York City skyline which almost came through on picture.

We hiked another mile to a stream and Tyler managed to find a great campsite just down stream of the AT. Overall we had an awesome day and made a ton of progress. I’m exhausted but tomorrow we will hike a few miles less which should let me rest up a bit.

Goodnight,

Walker
