Day 84 Dover Oak
I slept much better last night. The town noises woke me up at around 5 but I slept awesome until then. We woke up at 6:30 and were pretty slow getting breakfast and hanging out. We started hiking around 8:30.
We hiked 7 miles before stopping for a resupply. We had a couple views and passed a couple huge trees. The first one was called the Dover Oak and is supposed to be over 300 years old.
We then made it to the pickup location where we met our shuttle driver at around 11. She drove us into Hannaford for a resupply. It was strange being back in a Hannaford, they feel very familiar.
We got back to hiking by 12:30. We hiked past “Nuclear Lake,” named after a laboratory accident near by. We stopped for a picture but decided not to drink the water or hang out long.
Over most of the last 15 miles of the day we hiked through pastures and over boardwalks.
Shortly before the end of the day we entered Connecticut for the first time. We will officially finish New York tomorrow morning.
It rained on and off for most of the day. We are considering today as our third day of actual rain on trail, which is ludicrous to say. We have been very fortunate so far with the weather.
In the last two miles before camp we hiked over 10 Mile Hill, which was a little easier than expected. We stopped at 10 Mile shelter just before camp to eat dinner under a roof. We talked to a section hiker named “Dad Dog” who was very nice. We then walked another tenth of a mile to a tent site by a river.
Tomorrow we will cross the 2/3 marker, leave NY for the final time, and hike around 23 miles.
Goodnight,
Walker
